1. Design Philosophy

We adhere to the principles of authenticity, localization, and sustainable development of rural housing in the design process.
We realized that many rural areas, after nearly 20 years of crazy construction and demolition, no longer have their original rural history and culture. Therefore, people regretted and rebuilt them, but these places have lost their authenticity and cultural deposit.
The roads, water supply and drainage systems, bathrooms, and kitchens in many rural and urban historic districts in Jiangnan are no longer suitable for current development. Maximizing transformation in use is our main design approach, rather than simply dismantling it. The renovation of internal structures, resetting of external walls, insulation reinforcement of roofs, and moisture-proof treatment of floors are all possible and feasible operations.
For the reuse of buildings, it has been a tradition since ancient times in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions to place old bricks and tiles in courtyards for renovation and expansion. One side of the brick wall may have bricks from the Song Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, and Ming Dynasty.
Therefore, only through renovation, protection, and continued use can we make the best use of historical and cultural buildings.

2. Design Description

This design is based on the long-standing Suzhou architectural style, combined with modern architectural styles and engineering practices. Also this design balances the possibility of residents living independently and providing homestays, fully considers the daily needs of villagers, and provides leisure and entertainment spaces for visitors.
This design intends to create residential clusters for internet celebrities to drive rural economy. The residential buildings are built by the water, reminiscent of the ancient Silk Road and its important means of transportation - sailboats. The overall group and individual buildings will revolve around the element of "sailboat".
The four elements of a ship: sail, oar, anchor, and rudder correspond to four different layouts. Sails and oars represent dynamic elements, while rudders and anchors represent static elements. Inside the group buildings, there is movement, stillness, departure, and return, symbolizing that this place will be like a harbor, guarding every person who comes here.
The design demonstrated four personalities: lighthearted, complicated, calm, and stable, reflecting the diversified development goals of the village, laying the foundation for establishing an internet famous village.
The layout of the architectural cluster resembles a sailboat, with the rudder, sail, and oar forming the sail section, and the anchor house being the hull, symbolizing that the cluster will drive the vigorous development of the local economy. This layout forms a "C" - shaped enclosure, divided into two parts: the inner landscape and the outer landscape. The internal landscape enhances the overall integrity of the four courtyards and is the core of the entire cluster. The combination of external landscape and water landscape forms three small groups, arranged in an orderly manner to create a sense of rhythm.
